Our Diverse Universe

Written by Jenn Sadai

We live in an incredibly diverse and exciting world!

Have you ever stopped to think about all the different types of wildlife, plant life, and human beings that roam the earth? From our climates, to landscape, to bodies of water, every aspect of our planet is unique.

People are the most diverse beings on earth. There’s a vast variety of skin tones, hair colors and textures, eye colors, and body types. Some are born with additional physical or mental challenges while others are born with extraordinary talents. Every thing from our distinctive DNA to our individual characteristics varies from person to person. No two people are identical.

So, why do bullies pick on those who are different?

Bullying often starts with someone’s inability to accept people who don’t look or act the same way they do. Whether it is a small scale schoolyard bully picking on a redhead or kid with glasses, or blatant discrimination against people from a certain ethnicity or religion, it always seems to stem from ignorance of the unknown.

The same unfounded and illogical fear is the root cause behind homophobia. If you’re not physically attracted to a person of the same sex, how could someone else be? Some people will blame their narrow-mindedness on their religious beliefs and insist that only a man should lay down with a woman. They claim they can’t understand how someone could be gay or transgender, simply because they’re not. That logic makes about as much sense as saying, “I’m tall so I don’t understand how someone else could be short.”

We’re All One of a Kind

Someone who is the same gender as you doesn’t have the same genetic make-up. There could be thousands of ways you differ, including your appearance, personality, intelligence and sexual preference. Not every apple tree grows to the same height or produces the same amount of apples. Every living species is an original masterpiece.

If our entire planet was built on a vastly diverse eco-system filled with distinctive landscapes and cultures, why is it so hard to believe that God created a wide spectrum of sexuality? Why can’t sexual orientation be just as diverse as the rest of the universe?

Whether you believe in God or not, the world was created to showcase as much originality as possible. In fact, diversity is what makes the world so beautiful and inspiring. Life would be boring if everyone looked and thought the same way. Instead of fearing someone who isn’t the same as you, celebrate what makes them special!
