HRC Gala 2015: EvolveGNY A Night of Creating Change

IMG_5081I recently attended the Human Rights Campaign Gala 2015 in New York City at the Waldorf Astoria last Saturday January 31 as the founder of Bullies Keep Out. I am a huge supporter of other campaigns, organizations, and companies that I whole heartedly stand behind. Within my own campaign/movement, I advocate for many causes not limited to just bullying and hate. Some of those are LGBT, equality, suicide awareness, domestic violence, addiction, and animal abuse. So this night was highly important for me to attend being so fond of the HRC and what they do on a daily basis.

Mark, BKO guest writer, LGBT consultant, and social media and events assistant, and I were floored by the event and the entire night as a whole. We not only had an incredible time, but the night was filled with such passion for equality. Some might think that it is just all about having fun and being fancy, but it was that and so much more. It was filled with laughs and tears of joy from beautiful stories to the speeches given by featured attendees. President of the Human Rights Campaign Chad Griffin was truly an inspiration to listen to in person along with so many other VIP members that spoke in support. U.S. Senator Cory Booker had one of the most passionate and motivational speeches of the night. His words were graceful and powerful enough to shake a room.

To add a nice balance to the night, comedian Dana Goldberg had us laughing out loud with a comedic break while helping to raise funds through the HRC gala auction that was a huge success. Thousands of dollars were raised in the name of equality. The cast and filmmakers of “The Imitation Game” were honored as Matthew Goode spoke on behalf of the inspirational film. Star of the film Benedict Cumberbatch made an appearance via long distance video message with a grateful and appreciative thank you. This is just a glimpse into the night of creating change and continued fight for equality.

Towards the end of the evening we all had the pleasure of learning a little bit about Mary Lambert’s story and her endless support of LGBT rights and of the HRC. She then graced us with her angelic voice as she sang to close out the glorious night and an amazing cause.

We had a lovely time, and by the end of the night were that much more motivated to continue working together for LGBT rights. The event was done beautifully and everyone there had such a presence. We still have a great deal of work to do, but celebrating what has already been done by the HRC and hearing stories of struggle turn into victories is something to be proud of being a part of. All that has already been accomplished by the HRC is something that can’t truly be described in a few words.

It was not only a night to remember, but a night to embrace and be grateful for whether you are a supporter or a member of the LGBT community.

I urge you to all support and donate what you can to the Human Rights Campaign. They are America’s largest civil rights organization geared towards achieving LGBT equality. They aim to gain acceptance for LGBT individuals and share the same rights that we all enjoy no matter what our orientation at home, in the workplace, and all communities.

We must continue to stand up and speak out on behalf of each other. So many have fought for freedom and rights over the years, and we not only must remember that, but in return not give up on those around us that need that extra support to

We must continue to give back in any way we possibly can and put forth that effort to make it happen. On a final note, Mark and I are also proud members of the HRC, and hope to do continued work with them in the near future.
