The What, Where, Who, and Why of Bullying?

Bullying is a serious epidemic that has been going on for some time now. The spotlight is brightly shining on this issue. Bullying comes in many forms. It can be verbal, emotional, mental, or physical. There are no limitations on bullying. We are all susceptible to getting bullied. Bullying is an act of aggression towards another or a group. It can be through words (i.e. social media posts, letters, emails, texts) or actual physical violence. It can be an isolated attack, a threat, or group isolation.

There are three roles involved: The bully, the victim of bullying, and the witness/bystander. There is always something to be done. We must reach out and speak out to create change. Bullying can occur anywhere. It can take place at school, at home, in the workplace, in relationships, in families, in the community, or on the internet. In today’s society, cyber bullying is becoming more and more of a problem as we spend a great deal of our time online. Those at risk for bullying vary upon several different reasons and sometimes for no reason at all other than to fit in. There is no single answer as to why someone chooses to be a bully. There are warning signs such as isolation, mood swings, anger, depression, sadness, change in habits physically and mentally, lashing out, or unexplained bruising or injuries…just to name a few. Get help and tell someone what is happening so the proper action can be taken.

There is still so much work to be done. We need to not only support the victims, but the bullies as well. Bullies not only need punishment but help and rehabilitation so they do not remain a bully or hateful towards others. We need to get involved, stand up, create rules and policies, and take bullying seriously. There are no excuses when it comes to bullying and hate. We need programs and centers created for all ages to find a safe haven. The more we work together, the bigger waves we can make.  There are so many avenues and people here to help and provide support.

Bullying causes great distress in the lives of those involved. The signs are not always evident, so we must constantly be paying attention…and most of all, always be a friend. If we all play our part, we can gain control. Be kind and love big.

NOTE: We currently do not hold a 501(c)3 status, but we are a not for profit organization; therefore any donations will not be tax-deductible; however, BKO does do charitable fundraising work and raises funds for BKO to help us continue our work and fight. We are working on becoming a 501(c)3.
